CO2 surface variability: from the stratosphere or not?

چکیده

Abstract. Fluctuations in atmospheric CO2 can be measured with great precision and are used to identify human-driven sources as well natural cycles of ocean land carbon. One source variability is the stratosphere, where influx aged CO2-depleted air produce fluctuations at surface. This process has been speculated a potential interannual (IAV) that might obscure quantification other IAV. Given recent success demonstrating stratospheric N2O- chlorofluorocarbon-depleted dominant their surface IAV Southern Hemisphere, I apply same model measurement analysis here CO2. Using chemistry-transport modeling or scaling observed N2O variability, find stratosphere-driven most 10 % not an important source. Diagnosing amplitude annual cycle its increase from 1985 2021 through variance gives rates similar traditional methods Northern Hemisphere (BRW, MLO) but emergence small trends (0.08 ppm per decade) (SMO, CGO).

Stratosphere–Troposphere Coupling and Links with Eurasian Land Surface Variability

A diagnostic of Northern Hemisphere winter extratropical stratosphere–troposphere interactions is presented to facilitate the study of stratosphere–troposphere coupling and to examine what might influence these interactions. The diagnostic is a multivariate EOF combining lower-stratospheric planetary wave activity flux in December with sea level pressure in January. This EOF analysis captures a...

Variability of the Lagrangian turbulent diffusion in the lower stratosphere

Ozone and nitrous oxide are measured at high spatial and temporal resolution by instruments flying on the ER2 NASA research aircraft. Comparing the airborne transects to reconstructions by ensemble of diffusive backward trajectories allows estimation of the average vertical Lagrangian turbulent diffusion experienced by the air parcels. The resulting estimates show large Lagrangian diffusion of ...

Horizontal Temperature Variability in the Stratosphere: Global Variations Inferred from Crista Data

In two separate orbital campaigns (November, 1994 and August, 1997), the Cryogenic Infrared Spectrometers and Telescopes for the Atmosphere (CRISTA) instrument acquired global stratospheric data of high accuracy and high spatial resolution. The standard limb-scanned CRISTA measurements resolved atmospheric spatial structures with vertical dimensions 2 1.5 2 km and horizontal dimensions > 100 20...

The Predictability of Stratospheric Warming Events: More from the Troposphere or the Stratosphere?

The roles of the stratosphere and the troposphere in determining the predictability of stratospheric final warming and sudden warming events are evaluated in an idealized atmospheric model. For each stratospheric warming event simulated in the model, a number of forecast experiments are performed from 10 or 20 days prior to the warming onset with perturbations in the troposphere and in the stra...
